Salesforce, the marketing-leading cloud-based customer relationship management (CRM) system, have launched their cloud database service, Database.com.

In competition with Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS), Database.com adheres to a similar pay-as-you-go pricing model free for up to 3 users with 100,000 records and 50,000 transactions per month, $10 per month for each set of 100,000 records thereafter, and a further $10 per month for every 150,000 transactions beyond the first 50,000.

Database.com is designed to appeal to developers with a public application programming interface (API) and an adapter for the Ruby on Rails framework. It boasts a visual schema designer, automatic scaling, transactional reliability, row-level security and full text search. as well as OAuth or SAML authentication.
